Searching on the Internet

This page is designed to give some useful information on how to search more accurately and efficiently using Search Engines.

Search Engines may be used to find products, services and topics of interest on the Internet. Topics or Company names may be entered into a Search Engine window and all related topics are listed. From that screen, users may click on the closest matching link and be taken immediately to that site.

How to Search

Firstly, have a general idea of what you are searching for and type a keyword, or set of keywords into the search window.

After you have done that, and clicked on the search button, the Search Engine will search through it's database to find keyword matches.
These are usually displayed in a list.
Click on the highlighted text closest matching your search and you will be taken to that site.

How a Search Engine works

Search Engines sorts through results and lists them according to relevancy.
This is usually:
Multiple Keyword Matches:Documents matching more of the keywords are ranked higher in the list than those matching less.
Document Section Weighting:Documents matching words found in the title are ranked higher than those found in its body or URL.
Generality of Character:More general categories are ranked higher up than those with more narrowly focused categories.

Tips for a more accurate search.

Use double quotes around words that are part of a phrase. Example:

"Wall To Wall Computer Services"

Attach a + in front of words that MUST appear in the results. Example:
computer + training

Attach a - in front of words that must NOT appear in the results. Example:
python - monty
